The Data Driven Medical Practice

Changing payment models; reducing costs while improving patient care; aging populations with rising rates of chronic disease; consumer expectations… How do health care institutions best manage these issues? What’s the best way to do that? Organizations need to become data driven. According to an IBM white paper, “They must treat data as a strategic asset and put processes and systems in place that allow them to access and analyze the right data to inform decision-making processes and drive actionable results.”

There are 5 steps to achieving these goals:

  • Define all data sources – inventory current and future potential sources of data to identify possible options
  • Set data quality metrics and assess and improve the quality of proposed sources- standardize data formats and structure
  • Integrate data sources – determine which platform is best for integrating the data
  • Identify analytics needs – understand the analytics requirements in order to define priorities and determine the best visualization and statistics for the task
  • Secure and manage the data lifecycle – protect all forms of data, including administrative and clinical information (and the associated hardware and software), from internal and external risks

Applying these steps allows health care organizations to reduce chronic disease growth, advance care for aging populations, improve patient care and outcomes, better meet consumer expectations for improved service and more personalized care, as well as meet compliance and reporting requirements.
